Location
Dortmund fulfills all the preconditions required by the growth sectors of micro and nanotechnology. This future-oriented location is characterized by its high performance technology leaders, which, together with numerous innovative start-ups and well-positioned SMEs, form the backbone for further successful business models. The next few years are expected not only to provide increasing turnovers in the MNT market but also to have a positive impact on what is already a very dynamic employment market.
There are over 1900 staff working in 30 companies in Dortmund’s MNT cluster. The proportion of academically qualified employees is unusually high in many firms, running at over 75% in a third of all companies. With almost 50,000 students of technical or scientific subjects within a radius of 100 kilometers and microtechnology as a major field of study at the Technical University of Dortmund and University of Applied Science, Dortmund provides a great opportunity to benefit from a large pool of well-trained specialist staff.
These excellent location factors are bundled and coordinated by Dortmund’s four highly specialized centers of excellence. The BioMedizinZentrum, the Center for Packaging and Interconnection Technologies, the Center for Micro-Structure Technology and the MST.factory dortmund offer a broad spectrum of sector-specific expertise and support enabling technology transfer between scientific institutions and companies in the region.
The international association of microtechnology companies (IVAM) strengthens the collaborations between companies on regional, national and international levels. These favorable conditions have not appeared by chance, - we, the team at the dortmund-project, have been working with all the Dortmund MNT protagonists in companies and associations to drive this development ahead long term and to maintain the location of Dortmund as Germany’s number one future location for microtechnology.
